The menstrual cycle isn’t the same for all menstruating women. Statistically speaking, the cycle of a menstruating person lasts 28 days. The period itself lasts five days on average. So many of us have strong associations with the moon, as it follows a constantly repeating cycle, too. During our cycle, we go through a variety of hormonal phases. Some give us an incredible amount of energy. Others, for example, create a desire for rest. Some people hardly feel anything during their period. Others are in great pain. How we feel is completely individual. Women who suffer from severe pain experience severe limitations in everyday life (if you feel this way, please have a look at our project on endometriosis). In other parts of the world, the limitations are much more profound. Many menstruating people do not have access to suitable hygiene products and/or sanitary facilities, especially during their periods. Therefore, many of them have no choice but to stay at home during their period. As a result, they often miss out at school or do not have the opportunity to pursue a regular job. This affected also the women who are taking part on the sustainable education program from Take Action Uganda. So the NGO and the students decided to take action and develop a washable sanitary pad. Astrid from Starkstromhippie is personally concerned that we should also change our awareness on the subject of periods and realise that we need to team up so that we can all feel as free as our bodies allow us during our periods. Thank you, dear Astrid, for designing this collection with us.
